Lund University is one of Europe’s leading universities. Here, history and tradition lay the ground for the study and research environments of tomorrow. We offer education and research within engineering, science, law, social sciences, economics and management, humanities, theology, fine art, music and theatre. Through interaction with business and the community we ensure that knowledge and innovations benefit society. The University has 47 000 students and 6 300 staff from all over the world, based mainly in Lund, Malmö and Helsingborg. We work with 680 partner universities in more than 50 countries.

The Faculty of Medicine at Lund University offers a wealth of research, postgraduate and undergraduate education programmes in the fields of medicine and health care. The Faculty encompasses 2,500 full-time students enrolled in different programmes, as well as 950 postgraduate students and 1,100 employees. Research spans across a broad area from basic experimental research to applied research, in order to answer questions related to clinical practice, the health sciences and society. The research and education are conducted in close cooperation with the University Hospitals in Lund and Malmö and located mainly into three centres: the Biomedical Centre (BMC) in Lund, Clinical Research Centre (CRC) in Malmö and Health Sciences Centre (HCS) ? a strategic location in the middle of the Öresund Region.

Official Records Number: MPA 2011/234

Job assignments

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral position in experimental endocrinology and genetics with focus on network biology. Network biology is a novel way to study complex disorders, where genetics, gene expression and physiology are integrated. The project aims at studying the gene/protein networks that drive type 2 diabetes to identify disease mechanisms and targets that can be exploited for specific treatment. The project has a strong focus on the characterization of single-cell gene networks to better understand how heterogeneity within a cell population affects disease progression and treatment response. The project is technically advanced, and we will combine molecular biology, electrophysiology and cell-physiological techniques, including imaging and optogenetics, in animal models and human pancreatic islets. In addition, the human relevance will be examined by genetic analyses of patient cohorts.

The post-doctor will work under the principal investigator and will be part of LUDC. The successful candidate is expected to stay updated on the research within LUDC and to actively participate in common activities, e.g. to disseminate own results within the consortium and to assist other projects experimentally or intellectually.

Qualifications

To qualify for appointment the applicant must have a PhD degree.

Particular importance is given to scientific excellence. The applicant is expected to have a strong background in molecular biology and/or cell physiology, including work with transfections, DNA constructs and expression systems. Previous experience from imaging and optogenetics is an advantage but not a demand. The applicant should have an interest in developing new methodological platforms. Previous research in the diabetes area is not necessary. The applicant should have demonstrated skills in practical supervision of collaborators, independent work and scientific writing.
