Job Description
The mission of the Palo Alto Institute for Research and Education, Inc. (PAIRE) is to facilitate research and education activities conducted at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS). The range of research activities is broad and includes special emphasis on biomedical, health services, rehabilitation engineering, mental health and geriatric research endeavors. We also support various educational instruction or other learning experiences of benefit to employees and veterans.
PAIRE, a nonprofit foundation affiliated with the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS), is seeking a Clinical Research Postdoctoral Fellow to assume responsibility for collecting, analyzing, and writing-up data related to a clinical study of the effects of light on the human circadian timing system and other non-imaging forming aspects of vision.
The ideal candidate will possess a Ph.D. or M.D. and have some knowledge of vision-related neuroscience and/or sleep biology/circadian biology.

Duties:
Conducting experiments, including supervising overnight sleep studies;
Collecting data for study, including cognitive testing, sleep recordings, saliva collection, and exposure to experimental lighting;
Analyzing data collected in order to achieve a better understanding of how the human eye and the circadian system integrate light exposure over time;
Performing literature searches;
Preparing manuscripts for publication;
Presenting work at conferences;
Working in collaboration with research and clinical staff.
Requirements:
Ph.D. or M.D. in related field;
Proven knowledge in field of research study;
Some knowledge of vision-related neuroscience or sleep biology or circadian biology is a plus;
Experienced in a variety of research techniques or methods and follow-up data collection;
Advanced knowledge of scientific research methodology in order to develop policies, procedures and criteria for research program;
Ability to apply knowledge of development of new methods or procedures to the coordination of the study;
Attention to detail and good organizational skills;
Ability to use library resources for information on theoretical/scientific aspects of study/program;
Good computer, writing and speaking skills;
Knowledge of math and statistics.
Postdoctoral Fellows are those who receive a postdoctoral fellow appointment from Stanford University. This appointment may afford certain privileges at Stanford University, such as email account, library use, and housing information. Postdoctoral Fellows are eligible for health benefits through PAIRE but are not eligible for paid leave benefits, pension, or match in the PAIRE Retirement Plan. Postdocs may, however, defer to our 401k Retirement Plan.
