英国桑格研究院博士后岗位
job description
The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and ambitious postdoctoral fellow (PDF) to join the metabolic disease group at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. The role involves exploring gene function of candidate loci, arising from analyses of GWAS and whole-exome sequencing data from various patient cohorts focusing on common metabolic disease (type 2 diabetes, obesity and underlying quantitative traits), as well as rare extreme disease phenotypes (severe insulin resistance and early onset obesity). We are looking for an individual with a strong record of academic achievement who will be able to drive their own research ideas, taking advantage of Institute resources available to the group. Strong skills and experience in using zebrafish and mice animal models to explore gene function are essential. Previous experience of studying metabolic function in model systems is highly desirable. Excellent research and animal facilities are available and there is a strong commitment to career development.
Key responsibilities
• Develop own projects to study gene function of candidate loci arising from genetic analysis of metabolism phenotypes.
• Develop and implement relevant approaches and assays in zebrafish and mice to study metabolic gene function.
• To interact with the Zebrafish Mutation Resource and the Mouse Genetics Project to establish lines with alleles modelling variants causing human metabolic diseases.
• To provide operational oversight for the group’s model organism work and input into strategic planning.
• To maintain knowledge of the current, relevant scientific literature to ensure competitiveness of the group.
• Publish and present current research through high impact journals, posters and presentations in a timely manner to the benefit of the research community and the profile of the group.
Essential Skills
• PhD in relevant field.
• Strong scientific background and technical expertise in the generation and use of animal models.
• Experienced in developing assays in mice and/or zebrafish to study metabolic phenotypes.
• Experienced and skilled in approaches to performing molecular and phenotypic analysis of mouse and/or zebrafish mutants.
• Experienced in the use of bioinformatics tools.
• Experience and initiative in developing and leading projects.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong track record in writing and preparing manuscripts for publication, as well as other written materials
Ideal Skills
• Demonstrable good project management and organisational skills.
• Experience supervising junior group members.
Other information
Postdoctoral Fellows are typically in their first or second postdoctoral position as part of a period of early career research training. The role will be funded for 3 years.
Successful applicant(s) who have submitted their PhD thesis and are awaiting their PhD award to be confirmed will be placed on a transitional pay point, currently £26,103. On confirmation applicants will be moved on to the pay scale above.
The metabolic disease group (http://www.sanger.ac.uk/research/projects/metabolicdisease/) is a multidisciplinary team that combines large-scale genetic and genomic approaches, and studies in model organisms to understand the aetiology of various metabolic diseases. The group is involved in many large international consortia such as MAGIC, GIANT and the recently launched Uk10k project (www.uk10k.org) and work is very collaborative with internal and external groups.
The closing date for this position is 28th September 2011.
Benefits
The Institute has excellent purpose built facilities on the Genome Campus, Hinxton on the outskirts of Cambridge. We offer a comprehensive range of benefits including a final salary pension scheme and excellent on-site facilities. Further details can be found on our website https://jobs.sanger.ac.uk,
