Research Associate – Ph.D.-level Protein Scientist

The University of Minnesota Institute for Therapeutics Discovery and Development is seeking an experienced Ph.D.-level protein scientist to lead protein separation and purification efforts.

Required qualifications:
-Ph.D. in protein chemistry or closely related field.
-At least five years of academic or industrial experience in the area of protein purification.
-Excellent experimental skills; practical knowledge and hands-on experience with protein separation science and on techniques on various scales.
-Working knowledge of automated protein purification instrumentation such as AKTA Explorer and AKTA Pilot.
-Working knowledge of general analytical instrumentation (HPLC, MS, UV).
-Excellent communication and writing skills.
-Ability to work independently as well as in teams.
-Demonstrated ability to interpret data and resolve technical issues.
-Attentiveness to details is a must.
-Ability to work in a cGMP environment;
-Ability to work independently with minimum or no supervision.
-Ability to meet deadlines and appreciation of a business-like environment.

Preferred qualifications:
-Five years of industrial experience in the area of protein purification preferred.
-Biochemical and biophysical protein characterization experience is highly desirable.
-Knowledge and practical experience of cGMP environment is preferred.
-Hands-on experience with Amersham Biosciences Bioprocess system and Unicorn software.
-Project management and supervisory skills.
-Publications and patents.

Job responsibilities:
The position would require running biopharmaceutical purification operations and processes. The selected individual will participate in the design, implementation, and evaluation of research studies and will work in a multidisciplinary team focused on the development of processes for protein therapeutics from bench scale to cGMP manufacturing for clinical trials. The individual would be responsible for the facility operations, maintenance of the equipment and keeping it up to date, writing reports and collaborate on publication of findings. There may be supervisory responsibilities.

To carry out interdisciplinary research, help educate the next generation of scientists, and to enhance the biomedical research infrastructure at the University of Minnesota by creating opportunities for drug discovery and early pre-clinical drug development through collaborations between various schools, colleges and research centers, as well as industrial and academic partners throughout the State of Minnesota and nationwide.
