Postdoctoral Research Associates – Inorganic Chemistry/Metal-Organic Frameworks : Sydney, Australia
Employer: The University of Sydney (USYD)
Website: http://sydney.edu.au/positions/
Location: Sydney, Australia
Type: Postdoctoral
Posted: March 14, 2012
Expires: April 09, 2012
Requisition number: 254/0212

job description

FACULTY OF SCIENCE
SCHOOL OF CHEMISTRY
REFERENCE NO. 254/0212

• Develop multifunctional nanoporous materials to investigate novel phenomena arising from the interplay between structure, magnetism and electron transfer
• Develop novel nanoporous materials which are selective for the removal of greenhouse gases from industrial sources and their transformation into commodity chemicals
• Opportunity to work and collaborate with reputed academics in well established research driven School of Chemistry

The University of Sydney is Australia’s premier University with an outstanding global reputation for academic and research excellence. It employs over 7500 permanent staff supporting over 49,000 students.

The School of Chemistry is one of the main centres for chemical research and education in Australia. We attract an outstanding cohort of undergraduate students as well as postgraduate research students to this vibrant and world class research environment.

Applications are invited for two Postdoctoral Research Associates to work on collaborative research projects related to metal-organic frameworks. The Australian Research Council (ARC) funded project will explore multifunctional properties in metal-organic framework materials whilst the Science and Industry Endowment Fund (SIEF) project will explore the application of metal-organic frameworks to carbon dioxide capture and conversion schemes. These are opportunities to be involved in innovative research that will develop advanced multifunctional materials and new materials for application in industrial platforms. You will be based in the laboratories of Professor Cameron Kepert and Dr Deanna D’Alessandro.

The ARC project will involve the development of metal-organic frameworks in which the interplay between structure, magnetism and electron transfer can be investigated. Novel phenomena arising from this interplay will be examined using magnetic, electrochemical and spectroscopic methods of analysis in addition to x-ray structural determinations. The SIEF project will involve the development of metal-organic frameworks which are selective for the removal of harmful gases (particularly carbon dioxide) from effluent streams, and the detailed investigation of their structural and physicochemical properties. In addition, you will work to uncover the mechanisms and kinetics of carbon dioxide uptake and conversion in selected materials.

You will have:
• PhD in inorganic/materials chemistry
• proven research ability in inorganic chemistry evidenced by publications and strong evidence of research potential
• demonstrated ability to conduct research/scholarly activities under limited supervision either independently or as a member of a team
• ability to supervise students at the undergraduate level.

Knowledge of inorganic synthesis and x-ray structure analysis in addition to spectroscopic methods of analysis (magnetic, electronic) as well as analysis methods for porous solid state systems including gas adsorption analysis would be advantageous, though are not essential.

Spanning a history of over 80 years, SIEF supports scientific research in the fields of natural or applied science for the purposes of assisting Australian industry, furthering the interests of the Australian community and contributing to the achievement of Australian national objectives.

The positions are full-time fixed term for two years with the possibility of extension available from April 2012 and are subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. Further offers may be available subject to funding, need and performance. Membership of a University approved superannuation scheme is a condition of employment for new appointees.

Remuneration package: $92K p.a. including $78K base salary, leave loading and up to 17% superannuation. Visa sponsorship will be available for the successful appointee if required.

All applications must be submitted via the University of Sydney careers website. Visit sydney.edu.au/positions and search by the reference number for more information and to apply.

CLOSING DATE: 9 April 2012 (11:30PM Sydney time)

The University is an Equal Opportunity employer committed to equity, diversity and social inclusion. Applications from equity target groups and women are encouraged as they are underrepresented in this field.
