英国剑桥大学地球科学系招聘博士后

Limit of tenure: 3 years only.

Applications are invited for a three year postdoctoral research position in the University of Cambridge funded by a grant from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council to Prof. Michael Carpenter. The project involves development a new instrument, based on Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy, for measuring elastic and anelastic properties of small single crystal and ceramic samples at low temperatures and in a high magnetic field. The scientific objectives are to take advantage of the unique capabilities of the new instrument for determining the role of elastic strain and microstructure dynamics in controlling the structural evolution, magnetic, dielectric, electrical and electronic properties of ferroic and multiferroic materials. The project is based in the Dept. of Earth Sciences but involves collaboration with a number of different Materials Physics groups around the world.

Familiarity with the specific research involved is not a prerequisite but prior experience of elasticity measurements, magnetic measurements, phase transitions and/or of magnetic/ferroelastic/multiferroic materials would be an advantage.

The starting date is flexible, but will ideally be October, November or December 2012.
